Fun Fly Ideas

John Banks is looking for inputs for the club fun fly.  These are some of the events Dave Hoffman used 2 years ago.  They were all fun and those of us who participated had a ball.

Give it some thought and send your ideas to: John Banks or Fred Meyer

   Taxi Race:
Set up balloons on a figure eight (8) course.  A flagman starts the clock and the airplane at the same time.  The pilot drives the airplane through the course clockwise or counterclockwise.  As determined by the CD, the fastest time wins.

Rules:

  1. The airplanes’ wheels must remain in contact with the ground.  If your wheels leave the ground, a 10 second penalty will be added for each infraction.
  2. If a nose-over leads to a stopped engine, you will be allowed a 2nd attempt.  Two nose-overs is an automatic D.N.F.
  3. If an airplanes wheels leave the round for more then 10 seconds the pilot will be an automatic D.N.F.

  Crap Shoot:
Teams of two (2) people, a caller/dice-man & a pilot and a timer are required for this event.  The pilot starts the engine, his caller rolls 2 dice.  Whatever number comes up is the number of loops the pilot must perform.  The pilot taxis out and takes off.  The timer starts the clock when the wheels break ground.  The pilot climbs to altitude, performs the required number of loops, and lands.  At the discretion of the CD the caller may start rolling the dice when the plane is firmly on the ground or when it is back to a designated area.  When the caller rolls the same number that was rolled initially, the clock stops.  Lowest time wins.

  Climb & Glide:
The airplane is started and taxied out the runway.  When the airplane takes off, the timer starts the clock.  You are allowed 10 seconds to gain as much altitude as possible.  After 10 seconds of power, the engine is stopped and the aircraft is glided back to the field.  The clock stops when the plane lands.  Extra points could be allotted for spot landings.  The highest time wins.

  The Limbo:
Set up 2 poles about 20 feet apart with a crepe paper streamer for a limbo pole.  The lower you go, the better your score.  The pilot who flies beneath the lowest height without touching the aircrafts wheels wins.

    Rules:

1.        Impacting the aircraft 2 feet beyond the streamer shall be considered a failed attempt.

2.        Helicopters are allowed to participate but must pass beneath the streamer either backwards or inverted.

An alternative that can be used in the taxi race is use an unfamiliar airplane.  For mode 1 fliers, you would race with a mode 2 aircraft and visa-versa.  This is not for the faint of heart as a lift off usually leads to an interesting landing and words with the aircraft owner, but it is fun.
