PRESIDENT'S CORNER

 MAY 2003

Hey guys, the combat event is 5 weeks away. I want you to know I flew my MIG 3 foamy May 3rd and it is a HOT ROD. Bob Beaudeau flew it first and I hand launched it. It was a little hairy until Bob switched to low rates, but this plane is a ball to fly. It is powered by a Norvel Big MIG 0.25 engine turning a 9” x 4” prop at about 18k rpm. The plane is a bullet (I would guess (90+mph) and flys like it is on rails. JK Aerotech sells, a number of foamy’s and I am told they all fly great, so this might be a great choice for those of you who like to go fast, love warbirds and don’t want to spend much hard earned money It don’t look pretty, but wow, does it haul a--. We could hold pylon racing events with these birds and the complete cost is less then $200.00 for a nearly indistructable model.

Don’t miss the NE Combat event, you will enjoy it and get involved. We need officials, judges, cooks, and spectators. Come on out the 14th of June and join in the fun. It is exciting; you might even see me take big gas.

I attended the last day of the Top Gun event in Lakeland, Florida. Ron Czikowsky & Mark Rice was also in attendance. It was a great event with a spectacular mid day show by the highest-level demonstration pilots. Jason and David Shulman flying a Lanier Extra and Queque Somenzini flying his YAK 54 were among the show offs. Dave Patrick and Greame Mears flying a 1/3 scale Super Cub built from the structure up to exact scale were the big winners of team scale and 4 other trophies.

I’ve sent Bernie a few pictures to put on the web site for your enjoyment. The stuff was so good I kept forgetting to take pictures. Maybe Ron took better ones.

One final bit of news. Luis Carpio test flew his new 40% Edge 540 on May 3rd. It is powered by a ZDZ160 and this is a hauling power plant. He is using large can mufflers internal to the airframe with the exhaust pipes located in the front. The noise level is very low, and demonstrates how to build and fly large gas powered models at Salem and not exceed the noise levels we require by a bunch of dB. It blows my mind to watch Luis hover the plane on takeoff on the 2nd flight, perform knife-edge horizontal eights, and basically fly the pants off the big Extra.

Until Next time, Good Flying,

  Fred
